How Diffusion Films Work

Advanced Diffusion Film (ADF) is based on a volumetric diffusion technology rooted in precise materials choice and a proprietary manufacturing process. We produce tiny structures in the bulk of the film, similar to microlenses, that direct and shape light into a particular pattern.

The full width at half maximum (FWHM) angles, measured with a collimated light source, are noted for each film. The light distribution profile is either symmetric or asymmetric, with diffusion ranging from weak to strong. We control the profile by controlling the micro-structures in the bulk of the film.

We work with a selection of high performance polymers such as PET, PETg, PMMA and PC.

We control the light's path and its angular spread using bulk micro-structures that are produced through a proprietary manufacturing process based on extrusion. ADF helps a light fixture or LCD backlight achieve high uniformity through a combination of low clarity, high transmission, and high haze.

As light encounters a micro-structure it bends based on Snell's law, ultimately being scattered at a given angle. There is a probabilistic function of scattered light that generates the overall angular output distribution. The transmitted light output of the film has a lambertian output profile and varies approximately based on:

Light Output Formula

We fully control the proprietary production process, which allows for short production cycles and rapid technical adjustments that in turn accommodate custom product runs for high volume customers.

By diffusing through the volume of the film, ADFs are extremely durable and reliable in comparison to industry standard surface relief diffusers. ADFs can be handled without protective equipment and cleaned with non-abrasive surface cleaners like Windex or Isopropyl alcohol.
