ADVANCED DIFFUSION FILMS FOR LIGHTING ASSEMBLIES

The Fusion Optix ADF line—Advanced Diffusion Films—offers a wide range of circular and elliptical diffusion profiles with complete control over light output. These films are easily converted in lighting components to create a desired effect, such as intense glow or neon-like stripes. ADF utilizes volumetric diffusion technology, making it more durable, customizable and cost effective than coated or embossed alternatives.

Our films work especially well with LEDs. The degree of diffusion is customizable, and the films are able to diffuse even the tiniest point light sources. Our Applications Engineering group is able to choose which angle of diffusion works best with the specified LED array, leaving our customers with simple solutions for their lighting systems.

Sample kits available for purchase.

ILLUMINATE

International, taking place from May 8-10, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. LFI attracts over 19,000 attendees from the architectural, engineering, design, and end user sectors. At the exhibit, the Fusion Optix team will be featuring the new Pendant Optix™ System which is entered in the LFI Awards show, taking place on Tuesday, May 8th.

The Pendant Optix™ System will enable the creation of new designs for pendant luminaires with a combination of optical control and aesthetic appeal by utilizing a two component system of light guide and spread lens coupled with one or more directional light sources.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with a Fusion Optix staff member on-site, visit the attendees section of http://www.lightfair.com and find the Fusion Optix virtual booth in the exhibitor list.

INNOVATION BRIEF: LED BACKLIGHTING
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are quickly developing as the new light source of the modern age. Although the technology has been in existence for a century, it is only recently that LEDs are capable of comparable performance to their incandescent cousins. LED usage is popular in some arenas and is growing in others, while great strides are made yearly in overcoming the challenges that face the technology.

LEDs offer many benefits. Because of their long life time (50K + hours), LEDs are lower in lifetime cost than traditional lighting methods due to the decreased electrical power consumption and the lower rate of replacement despite the high initial power supply cost. The intrinsic fast response times of LEDs also open up the driving scheme design space for LED based applications. For example, a field sequential pulsed width modulation LED drive scheme allows efficient dimming control and color filter-less LCD display (3 times brighter) while potentially tripling the LCD resolution.

Fusion Optix sees the need for innovation in the LCD Backlighting space, and we focus on LED systems as the basis for that innovation. Not only is there a lack of LED backlighting products among display companies, but there is also a lack of LED backlight unit engineering expertise. The team at Fusion Optix designs LED Backlight Units (BLUs) for LCDs of all sizes. We have decided to further enter the LED space by offering LED strips with accompanying drivers.

Our Applications Engineering team designed the LED arrays to be incorporated into our BLU prototypes and demos; they perform optimally in our designs, and we offer them in LED development kits. We have improved upon many of the negative aspects that surround LED backlighting while exploiting the positive aspects of the emerging light source.

The efficiency of LEDs roughly doubles every 12-18 months. The speed of advancement enables the best LED technology today to be 10 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. A Fusion Optix LS1-015 LED strip contains 19, 1W white LEDs at approximately 35 lumens/watt. A single edge-lit LS1-015 LED BLU, with the appropriate lightguide and Fusion Optix film stack, can achieve head-on brightness of 1300 nits from an LCD display. A double edge-lit BLU has the advantage of achieving the same head-on brightness with better efficiency and less generated heat. Because of our unique optical film technology, Fusion Optix LED BLUs are efficient and customizable; our lightguides, prism films, and bottom diffusers diffuse light evenly across the panel, while our top diffusers control the viewing angle.LED BLUs are particularly useful in battery-operated and energy saving devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, notebooks, and avionic displays.

The market for LED BLUs is steadily growing. The biggest challenge thus far has been large-size LED BLUs (LCD TVs, monitors, notebooks). LED BLUs 10” and over accounted for less than 1% of the overall market in 2005 and 2006. The trend is sure to grow as previous obstacles are overcome, and slightly higher prices are overlooked because of the overwhelming benefits LED BLUs provide in LCD displays, such as better color and longer lifetime. Additionally, LEDs are shock/vibration resistant and more durable then traditional bulbs, making them ideal for applications requiring more rugged components.
