A Novel Concept
2 Fusion Optix has designed a new ultra-slim, efficient backlight module for the new LED monitor era. Dubbed “Concept™ Series”, it combines patented light management optics and advanced LED assemblies, that surpasses BLU industry standards.

At the core of the new system design is an edge lit design and a wave guide constructed of high quality polymer materials. The LED count is kept low, but does not concede any uniformity or brightness. These technologies have enabled the engineering team to generate a BLU that is much thinner than the OEM standards, leading the way for an overall slimmer monitor.

The green friendly, mercury-free design features the following:

  • 30,000+ hours lifetime

  • Low power consumption

  • No hotspots

  • Advanced thermal management

  • Wider viewing angles

Product Spotlight

Collimation Film from Fusion Optix is available for display brightness enhancement. The films use a refraction and reflection process to increase the brightness and efficiency of backlights. Light that is unable to leave the BLU within the proper viewing cone is reflected back into the unit and recycled until it exits at the correct angle. A single layer of Collimation Film can be used or combined with another layer placed perpendicular at 90 degrees to create a cross brightness enhancement effect.

Collimation Film comes in various thicknesses depending on the application It can be offered in a thin sheet for small mobile displays all the way up to larger LCD Displays which is produced on a thicker substrate.

SID Assembly in New England
On Thursday, November 8th, Fusion Optix VP, Dr. Zane Coleman took part in a panel for a SID New England meeting held on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA.  Dr. Coleman, along with colleagues in the display industry, fronted the panel to discuss and field questions on LED back light unit (BLU) market trends.

The panel argued that while LEDs are beginning to take a chunk of the BLU market away from cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL), and boast advantages such as high color gamut and high contrast ratio, they also have run into some challenges like sub-par performance and high pricing.  Still, the share for LED BLUs is predicted to gain ground each year through the end of 2010 to own more than 35% of the market.

In his work with Fusion Optix, Dr. Coleman is working to ease the transition to LEDs in the back light industry.  The modules developed here are thinner because of an edge-lit design.  The LED count is kept low without sacrificing uniformity because the optical films and wave guides used are developed with high quality polymer materials with advanced optical properties.  For more information on Fusion Optix BLUs, click here.

On the (Laser) Cutting Edge

Fusion Optix now offers full LED system solutions, including custom light guide development and precision finishing of optical films, for backlight module construction. Recently, our engineering department installed laser-based prototyping capabilities at our Cambridge, MA headquarters to handle requests for custom cut parts.

Fusion Optix employs a unique approach to solving LED systems design and adoption issues by utilizing our light management film and sheet technology, augmented with the development of advanced waveguide, LED assembly and driver technologies.

Our system solutions facilitate the transition from traditional light sources, such as CCFL backlights, to more energy efficient and environmentally friendly LEDs.

Our in-house capabilities also include support for housing and fixture designs for LED backlight modules and LED light engines.

Custom cut LED lighting lenses as well as die cut film for both lighting and display applications are now available. We are able to produce lenses for fixtures as small as MR-16 to as large as PAR. Our backlight modules range in size from 10.4 to 24 inches and feature a new ultra-thin design. Our products can be ordered by calling into our office, 617.649.1010, or by emailing to info@fusionoptix.com.

Fusion Optix Web 2.0

Fusion Optix has done some housekeeping on fusionoptix.com and has redesigned the layout of the site. Our new toolbar now better reflects what we are trying to achieve in both the Lighting and Display industries. Click to see what our team of engineers has accomplished in its work with LED Systems, including backlight modules, and LED assemblies & drivers. The new OEM Components section gives a better understanding of what is now available on the market from Fusion Optix. Finally, check our corporate pages to see our partnering philosophies, IP standards, or to drop us a line.
